Mango trees are some of the tallest, most generous trees in a Cameroonian garden wide canopies that shade entire courtyards, dropping fruit for months at a time. Most people know the fruit. Far fewer have tried what grows on the branch above it.
Golden Canopy is our infusion made entirely from mango leaves a completely different experience from the fruit, and one of the most surprising teas in our collection for first-time drinkers.
What Is Mango Leaf Tea?
Mango leaf tea is brewed from the dried leaves of Mangifera indica, the mango tree. It has nothing to do with the sweet, juicy flavor most people associate with mango instead, the leaves produce a smooth, mellow cup with a soft natural sweetness of its own, closer to a mild green tea than to fruit juice.
Since it's brewed from a leaf rather than Camellia sinensis, mango leaf tea is naturally caffeine-free.
A Leaf With Deep Roots in Traditional Practice
Mango leaves have long been used in traditional preparations across Africa and South Asia, often boiled fresh at home rather than sold commercially. In Cameroon, where mango trees are practically part of the landscape, using the leaf not just the fruit is a familiar, unfussy practice rather than a trend.
What's Inside the Leaf
Mango leaves contain natural plant compounds, including tannins and a compound called mangiferin, which has drawn some scientific interest for its antioxidant properties. As with most botanicals, research is still developing, and a cup of tea should be enjoyed as a pleasant ritual rather than treated as a remedy for any specific condition. If you're managing a health condition or taking medication, check with your doctor before adding a new herbal tea to your routine.
